What is Japan's accommodation tax?

Japan's accommodation tax (宿泊税) is a local lodging tax levied by some prefectures and municipalities on paid stays at hotels, ryokan, vacation rentals and similar lodging. Most rules are based on the pre-tax, room-only charge per person per night, applied as a fixed amount or a percentage. Rates, thresholds and start dates vary by municipality and change often.
